ABOUT THE
SHOW:
Gypsy Rose Lee and the Minsky Follies is Ixion
Burlesque's latest venture.
The show evolves with every new showing, incorporating new songs, new skits
and even new cast members!
Guided by Ixion's founder, historian and dramaturg, Albert Garzon, the show is a loving tribute to Billy Minsky's Follies, the Burlesque theatre on 42nd Street that employed, among others, Gypsy Rose Lee during the Great Depression.
The cast re-creates some of Gypsy Rose Lee's original routines and monologues, as well as some of Minsky's original Burlesque comedy skits. As Gypsy herself puts it,
"When
most people think of Burlesque, they think of the girls.
Me, I think of the Comics!"
The score, with charts lovingly re-created by Albert Garzon and played by Ixion's live three piece band, brings to light numerous songs written by Eli Basse, a legendary comedic composer from the Yiddish Theater in the 1920's and 30's. Basse's music is rarely heard today, but he was hired by Billy Minsky to write original strip-tease music for the Minsky Follies.
If you have
an interest in Burlesque or theatre history or a passion for Burlesque in general,
let Ixion take you back to Burlesque's depression-era heyday, when times were
hard, money was tight,
and everyone needed a little fun!
